Woodlands Academy hosts free Fine Arts Evening

An evening to enjoy student drawing, printmaking, painting, ceramics and photography exhibits, along with Spring Concert performances by the school's choirs and orchestra, is in store at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart's annual Fine Arts Evening.

This end-of-the-year celebration of the arts, which is free, takes place from 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 14. The Spring Concert will be at 7 p.m. in the school's chapel, 760 E. Westleigh Road, Lake Forest.

"It is always exciting, after the students install their artwork to experience the strong sense of individuality that each artist expresses and the pride that runs through our school community," said Fine Arts Department Chair Catherine DeVuono, a visual art instructor at Woodlands Academy since 2006.

The evening begins with a reception for the artists at 6 p.m. in the student gallery.

The concert in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart will feature the music performed by the Microscope and Kaleidoscope choirs and Symphonic Orchestra at the New York competition April 17-20.

The honors for Woodlands Academy, the smallest of the 15 schools from the U.S. and Canada competing in the festival, included a Gold award for both choirs and a top-score trophy for the best orchestra.

In addition, Microscope's director, senior Chloe Tomkins of Lake Forest, received the festival's Ovation Award, which goes to the one student selected to represent the entire festival population of nearly 2,000 participants, in recognition of the leadership skills she presented as well as her sense of caring and community for her group's singers and her stellar accomplishment of directing a Gold award choir.

Senior Lilly McAveeney, who also received a recognition award, will perform her solo in the Kaleidoscope number "El Vito," by Joni Jensen.

"Woodlands Academy's choral and instrumental music programs continue to grow and establish themselves for their quality among the best programs on the North Shore. Our young ladies are committed musicians and take great pride in their accomplishments. The Spring Concert is the culmination of this year's work for all of our fine ensembles," choral director and music department coordinator Elizabeth Kurowski said.
