Well-rested Stevenson gets two champions in sectional victory

Danielle Vasiliev caught a break by getting some extra sleep on Saturday morning.

The added energy boost came in handy for her in netting the Stevenson girls tennis sectional singles title on Saturday night.

“I got up in the morning and I was expecting to play,” Vasiliev said. “I was kind of happy because I got a chance to sleep in more, until 11 a.m. It really didn’t affect me, because I do like playing tennis more at night.

“I did get a chance to practice about an hour before the matches to get ready.”

Inclement weather and rainy conditions on Saturday pushed the meet indoors at College Park Athletic Club in Deerfield, but not until the evening when court time was available.

Vasiliev defeated Mindy Borovsky of Deerfield 6-3, 6-0 in the championship match.

Also advancing for the Patriots were Alexxis Kiven and Kaylin Dong, who won doubles as Stevenson captured its own sectional for the second straight year.

“It was a little nerve-wracking going through the final two matches,” Vasiliev said. “I knew (Borovsky) because I’ve played against her before. I knew the match might be pretty hard out there.”

Vasiliev reached the final by getting past Deerfield’s Ariel Lozovsky 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

The Patriots’ other singles player, freshman Vinaya Rao, lost in the third place match to Lozovsky 6-3, 6-3. Rao fell to Borovsky 6-2, 6-1 in the semis.

In the doubles championship, Kiven and Dong defeated the Barrington duo of Michelle Linden and Zoe Kasiurak 7-5, 6-2. Kiven and Dong reached the final with a victory over Dana and Lauren Goggin of Buffalo Grove 6-2, 6-2 in the semis.

Linden and Kasiurak rallied to defeat Jenna Borzak and Jamie Fox of Deerfield 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 in the third-place doubles match.

“It was great playing all around,” Barrington coach Tracy Waters-Miller said. “We needed to make a few more shots (in the doubles final) here and there. These girls were put together for state.”

Dana Goggin and Lauren Goggin claimed the third-place match over Borzak and Fox by default.

The twin sisters will be making their fourth straight trip to state.

“These girls are very consistent,” Buffalo Grove coach Kevin Schrammel said. “We’re hoping to match or beat what we did last year (at state).

“This was one of the toughest sectionals in the state, with very tough competition.”
