Latino Coalition presents 6 scholarships

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Latino Coalition of Lake County hosted a Scholarship Award Ceremony to present grants to six college students from the Waukegan area. The event was held at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago. This year’s scholarships were granted by Midwest Generation’s Waukegan Generating Station.

The Latino Coalition of Lake County is a nonprofit organization that focuses on the improvement of the quality of life among Latinos in Lake County, led by President Elizabeth Rosiles. Susan Olavarria, a representative for Midwest Generation, along with Rosiles and members of the coalition’s board were on hand to present the scholarships to the recipients.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Coalition of Latinos of Lake County to support their work of serving the community of Lake County and providing our youth an opportunity to excel academically,” said Susan Olavarria.

Midwest Generation is an active neighbor in all communities where it operates, from employees’ volunteer work, to developing local projects and fostering educational opportunities for students through scholarships.

The winners of this year’s scholarships are: Jose Catalan from College of Lake County, Melvin Flores from University of Illinois of Springfield, Carla Gutierrez from Northeastern University and Nancy Gutierrez from Beloit College in Wisconsin, Daniel Manjarres from DePaul University in Chicago and Ana Osornio from Beloit College in Wisconsin.
