Veterans Day events in Lake County
Many local communities and groups are commemorating Veterans Day with special events on or around Friday, Nov. 11. Here’s a list of Lake County events:
College of Lake County: CLC’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony is at noon Thursday, Nov. 10, in Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium) on the Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St. The keynote speaker is Commander Robert S. Sullivan, executive officer of Naval Station Great Lakes. The event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the CLC Student Activities Program Board. Call (847) 543-2290.Fox Lake: Fox Lake American Legion Post 703 hosts a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Fox Lake Veterans Memorial at the Fox Lake Metra Station at Nippersink Drive and Grand Avenue. Gurnee: Gurnee American Legion Post 771 hosts a Veterans Day dinner open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the legion hall at 749 N. Milwaukee Ave. Tickets are $10 each and available at the post bar or by calling Jim Huisel at (847) 910-3330.Lake Zurich: Author Cyndee Schaffer will share excerpts of #147;Mollie#146;s War,#148; the memoirs of her mother#146;s experiences during World War II, at a Veterans Day book signing and talk at Silverado Senior Living-Lake Zurich, 555 America Court. Her 95-year-old mother hopes to attend the event. Silverado resident and Purple Heart recipient Stanley Skladzien, a Marine who was wounded on Guam in World War II, will also be on hand for the signing. The book signing is 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday. Libertyville: The Second Brigade Motorcycle Club of Lake Villa hosts its annual Veterans Day breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in the main dining room at Winchester House nursing home, Winchester Road and Milwaukee Avenue in Libertyville. Officers and Navy personnel will be on hand. The guest speaker is 10th District U.S. Rep. Robert Dold. This event is not open to the public.Lindenhurst: Veterans memorial service is at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, on Lindenhurst village hall grounds, 2301 E. Sand Lake Road. The ceremonies include the Boy Scout Troop 87 Color Guard, the Lakes High School Marching Band and Lindenhurst VFW Post 4894. Army Maj. General (retired) James H. Mukoyama is the keynote speaker. There will be a moment of silence and rifle salute at 11:11 a.m. at the Waukegan Veterans Plaza. Free buffet lunch for veterans and members of the military at the Undercroft Gallery in the lower level of Christ Episcopal Church, West Street and Grand Avenue. Scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., $3 for members of the general public. Gallery also features 50 wartime sketches and watercolors of World War II by veterans Malcolm Layson and Art Czajkowski. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. Breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10. For information, call Mary Castellano at (847) 990-4100.타 Lakes Community High School hosts its third annual Veterans Day Observance, on Thursday, Nov. 10. Activities include refreshments, individual recognition, and an all-school assembly. The event will start with refreshments for veterans at 1 p.m. 타 Grayslake Central High School plans a special breakfast and luncheon for Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11. Grayslake Central#146;s public service practicum classes will honor the contributions of local veterans, while making students more aware of the military accomplishments. The breakfast is 8 to 9:30 a.m. and lunch is 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A schoolwide ceremony honoring the vets is 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.
