Workshops emphasize green technologies

Interested in going green at home or at your business? The College of Lake County offers several opportunities to learn green practices during the spring 2011 semester.

Three workshops are offered by the college’s Workshop and Professional Development Institute (WPDI). Instructors and course materials will be provided by the Wisconsin-based Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA).

Ÿ Saturday, Feb. 19: Green Building Technology and Energy Efficiency. Discover new technologies in the “green” construction industry in heating, cooling, air quality, electrical and plumbing systems. Learn about the codes that govern building, how to inspect a home, budgeting for construction and how conservation can save you a large percentage of your energy bill. The instructor, Tim Fisher, is a licensed home inspector and teaches CLC’s Home Inspection licensing course. Location and time: Grayslake campus, Room T133 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $99.

Ÿ Saturday, April 16: Introduction to Wind Systems. Discover how to harness the energy of the wind. Learn the basics of wind energy, wind resources, basic system components, system types, turbine applications and tower types. This course is a prerequisite to MREA wind systems workshops and for people who have an interest in residential-size wind systems for their home or business. Bring a calculator to class. Materials are included in the course fee. Location and time: Room T334 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $129.

Ÿ Saturday, May 7: Basic Photovoltaics. Learn the basics of photovoltaic systems that are able to convert light directly into electrical energy. You will understand how photovoltaic systems work, identify the four system types, describe and identify components, understand the best application and limitations of each system type and define the solar window. Learn to make energy efficiency and load estimates, identify photovoltaic mounting types and understand the basics of site assessment tools. Bring a calculator to class. Location and time: Room T323 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cost: $129.
