Miranda rights lectureAurora University will host a lecture about whether Miranda rights should be extended to suspected terrorists at 1:15 p.m. today in the Aurora Foundation Center's Perry Theatre, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. Amos Guiora, a professor of law at the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law, will speak about whether suspected terrorists should be given a verbal warning of their constitutional rights in the legal system, or whether those suspects should be denied the warning to protect public safety. Guiora has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee about the handling of terrorism detainees and has expertise in counterterrorism and international law.Constitution Day at CODThe criminal justice and political science departments at College of DuPage will host Constitution Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, in the Glen Ellyn school's Technical Education Center, Room 1038A/B. All events are free and open to the public. At 10:30 a.m., Shawn Healy, resident scholar at the McCormick Foundation Civic Program, will speak about the challenges at the intersection of the media and democratic politics in the 21st century. At 11:30 a.m., Mary Beth Tinker will tell her story during a presentation called "Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent Community School District." Tinker was a 13-year-old student when she and her brother were suspended from school for wearing an arm band to protest the Vietnam War. COD is located at 425 Fawell Blvd.Calling all dogsDogs are encouraged to bring their human companion for some canine fun during the fourth annual "Ruff'n It" at Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Naperville. The free event will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19. A variety of activities are planned, including displays of obedience techniques, first aid and CPR for dogs and canine law-enforcement techniques. A veterinarian will be on hand to answer general canine health and nutrition questions. "Ruff'n It" takes place outside the off-leash dog area at Greene Valley Forest Preserve. All dogs at the event must be leashed and remain well-mannered and under control at all times. To enter the off-leash area, an advance-purchase permit is required for each dog. The off-leash area is located near Greene Valley's north parking lot on Greene Road one-quarter mile south of Hobson Road. For more information, call (630) 792-2100.
