Get the facts on COD negotiations

In a March 24 letter to the editor, College of DuPage Professor Richard Jarman falsely claims that the College Administration has broken agreed-upon ground rules regarding faculty contract negotiations by releasing a statement to the public. The college in fact adhered fully to the ground rules by providing the required notice before public communication about faculty contract negotiations.

Mr. Jarman accuses the college of launching a public-relations campaign against the faculty. This is again untrue. It is well-documented that it is faculty leadership who have taken contract negotiations into the public arena. They began with handing out printed material to members of the news media at the Feb. 21 COD Board of Trustees meeting.

At the March 15 board meeting, the faculty association again spoke at length regarding contract negotiations. The next day they took out a large advertisement in the March 16 edition of the Daily Herald discussing negotiations and claiming they were being treated unfairly despite instruction from board Chair David Carlin that neither party should be doing so. The college did not issue a press release clarifying its position until after these repeated attempts by faculty leadership to publicly discuss negotiations.
