Donate used books for needy students in Dist. 300

Do you have gently used books that are taking up space on your bookshelves or in the attic?

The Westfield Community School Parent Teacher Organization and the Jacobs High School Rotary Interact Club are collecting books to donate to needy classrooms across the district.

Teachers will make books available to students during silent reading time and also for those who do not have many books to read at home.

Books can be dropped off at the front office of Westfield, 2100 Sleepy Hollow Road, Algonquin, or Jacobs High School, 2601 Bunker Hill Road, Algonquin. The schools will accept book donations until the end of the month. The schools will also collect study aids, such as flashcards.

Chemistry quiz: You may be smarter than a fifth-grader, but how much do you know about chemistry? Elgin Area Unit District U-46 is hosting the eighth annual You Be the Chemist Challenge, which features the district's top science students from eight area middle schools. The event is open to the public and will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. The competition is a fun and exciting way to engage students in chemistry. For weeks, the students have been duking it out in classroom competitions, vying for a spot on their school's three-person team. The finalists will compete for the title of #8220;Jr. Scientist#8221; and for a chance to advance to state and national competitions. The winner of the U-46 contest will earn an iPad 2.You Be the Chemist is sponsored by UOP, a Honeywell company, and is nationally organized by the Chemical Educational Foundation.Kindergarten orientation: In Elgin Area District U-46, this is coming up in April. Orientations will take place at the elementary schools between April 3 and April 20. More information can be found on the district's website, u-46.org. Children turning 5 before Sept. 1, 2012 are eligible for kindergarten in the fall of 2012.
