Respite Provides Needed Support

It's a unique program that provides something a little bit different, but equally as important, to the entire family. Radford Green's innovative respite program gives Chris Pawlowski peace of mind, her father Conrad Pawlowski extra time to regain his independence, and her mother Alice Pawlowski time with her husband of 71 ½ years.

Ninety-four-year old Conrad of Northbrook has been in and out of the hospital over recent years. After his two most recent hospital stays, Conrad was released for rehabilitation at Radford Green Healthcare and Rehabilitation at Sedgebrook senior living community. "He received excellent care," said Chris. Because Conrad is a little frail and prone to infections, he's been part of the healthcare center's respite program. The initiative is designed to ease a guest's transition back into their home. "Sometimes, the individual just needs a bit of extra time, assistance, and caring after short-term rehabilitation or illness. Sometimes, a caregiver or family member needs a break. Whatever the case, our objective is to provide some additional support for however long it may be needed," said Keegan Sawyer, administrator for Radford Green.

"My father ultimately wants to be home, and we're committed to helping make that happen," said Chris. "The staff at Radford Green is helping to ensure that he regains his strength."

In the respite program at Radford Green, Conrad is living in an assisted living apartment where he has access to all amenities and activities. The specially trained restorative staff is dedicated to helping make sure he's up and moving as much as possible in order to get stronger. He receives all of his meals, has his health monitored, and receives assistance with medication management.

The respite program, said Chris, is a tremendous "resource that gives me such peace of mind. I know that the staff is looking after my dad and that he's being well-cared for. I work long hours and am also a very busy volunteer. It makes me feel better that he's there."

Furthermore, Conrad's wife, Alice, is able to come from home and spend every day with him. "She frequently has meals with him, and the staff makes her feel really welcome," said Chris. "It's important that they're able to spend time together."

Chris said that her family has had experience with other nursing homes, none of which can compare with Radford Green. "I have recommended Radford Green to many people. It's obvious that they really care about my dad," said Chris. "Everyone who works there, including the people at the front desk, those behind, the scenes, and certainly the caregivers are so nice and helpful."
