Get out of town, into your element with 4-H Science this summer

ST. CHARLES, Ill. - Join University of Illinois Extension staff and local 4-H Science Ambassadors for two specialized camp adventures this summer. Explore science, technology, and Mother Nature at the beautiful Rock Creek on the 100-plus acre grounds of the historic Camp Shaw-Waw-Nas-See in Manteno.

"We are hosting a weeklong camp focused environmental science this June, and one featuring robotics and technology in July," said Donna Nuger, University of Illinois Extension 4-H Youth Development Educator, serving DuPage, Kane and Kendall Counties. "Each day will incorporate focused science curriculum, as well as time for classic camp experiences, such as archery, swimming and hiking."

From Sunday, June 14 to Saturday, June 20, youth, age 7 to 17, can participate in Environmental Science Camp. They will be a citizen scientist by testing water quality and studying streams. Campers also will learn about birds, mammals, wildflowers and prairie plants.

In July, youth, age 7 to 17, can attend Science & Technology Camp from Sunday, July 5 to Saturday, July 11. During the week, participants will experiment Lego Mindstorm and Arduino technology. The group also will explore the camp grounds, marking landmarks and amazing finds with GPS.

Each session also allows for traditional camp activities, songs and more.

"We are excited to offer these specialized camps to area youth, and you do not need to be a current 4-H member to attend," Nuger said.

A 10-year Tufts University study found that 4-H'ers are five times more likely to plan to graduate from college, and they are nearly two times more likely to pursue a career in science, engineering, or computer technology.

Space is limited. To learn more, visit web.extension.illinois.edu/dkk/4hsummer, or for more about prices, facilities and registration, visit the Specialty Camp section at campshaw.org/summer-camp/family-camp.

Cost is $425. Current year 4-H members receive a $20 discount, and receive $20 off for each additional sibling. If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please notify at least two weeks prior to the event.
