Learn about Sears kit homes with Glen Ellyn Historical Society Nov. 6

On Saturday, Nov. 6, the Glen Ellyn Historical Society will present "The Story of Sears Roebuck Kit Homes."

In the early 20th century, Sears, Roebuck & Co. used to sell "kit homes" that were delivered by train, then assembled by the homeowner (or construction crew) right on the homeowner's lot.

Other companies, like Montgomery Ward, also sold kit homes from catalogs.

How do home owners determine if their home is a Sears home?

The program will begin at 2 p.m. at the Glen Ellyn History Center, 800 N. Main St.

Learn about kit homes from Lara Solonickne, a local expert on Sears homes in Glen Ellyn and surrounding communities. She has been a featured program speaker before for the Glen Ellyn Historical Society and she is a wealth of information.

For this presentation, she has updated her database with new local finds so this program is about catalog houses never before seen.

Refreshments will be served.

Admission $8, $6 for Glen Ellyn Historical Society members, or $5 for students, age 18 or younger.
