Page Turners to discuss 'Dragon Cafe' Feb. 21
College of DuPage's Page Turners Book Club will host book discussions on Judy Fong Bates' “Midnight at the Dragon Cafe” on Monday, Feb. 21, and Erik Larson's “The Devil in the White City” on Monday, April 11.
Both of these free events will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Student Resource Center, Room 2052.
“Midnight at the Dragon Cafe” tells the story of Su-Jen Chou, whose parents fled Communist China in the 1950s and opened a Chinese restaurant in a Canadian town. Su-Jen watches as her mother pines for her old life in China and her father works hard to be successful. When her older half-brother arrives, Su-Jen hopes life will change for all of them. In 2006, “Midnight at the Dragon Café” received the American Library Association's Alex Award as an adult book with special appeal to young adult readers.
“The Devil in the White City” is a nonfiction New York Times bestseller set before, during and after the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. The narrative follows two main characters: architect Daniel Burnham, who was in charge of the fair's construction and aggressive timetable, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer who capitalizes on the influx of people coming to Chicago for the fair. “The Devil in the White City” was a 2003 National Book Award finalist.
The Page Turners, which began in 2004, organizes community-building and cultural events that revolve around the themes of writing and literature in their many forms.
