COD Library offers SOS workshops this spring

The Library at College of DuPage is offering several free SOS Workshops in March and April for students, staff and community members.

The workshops are designed to give participants an overview of topics to help with research, social network tools and library resources. All workshops meet in the Library, located on the second floor of the Student Resource Center, at the Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd.

"Research Basics: The Research Process" is offered 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 11. This beginner workshop offers an introduction on how to begin and effectively finish research using library and online sources.

"Research Basics: Finding & Evaluating Information" is offered 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 3, and Tuesday, April 26, and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 14. Participants learn how to use the COD Library catalog and databases, and receive evaluation techniques for finding the best research sources.

"Advanced Research: Search Strategies & Techniques" is offered 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 7, and 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 17. This workshop features effective and time-saving strategies to find the best information on the Internet. The session includes advanced concepts such as Boolean logic, nesting, truncation and field searching.

"Citing Sources with NoodleBib Software" is offered 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, and 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 5. Participants learn how to use NoodleBib Software to manage and create reference lists in MLA and APA format, how to create a NoodleBib account, and how to make a reference list with common sources.

"MLA: Citing & Paper Formatting" is offered 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday,

March 10; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 23; 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13; and noon to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 29. The April 13 session is held in SRC 2638 (library, first floor). Participants learn the basics of citing sources and formatting papers in the Modern Language Association style.

"APA: Citing & Paper Formatting" is offered 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3; 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 13; 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 2; and 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 18. Participants learn the basics of citing sources and formatting papers in the American Psychological Association's style.

"To Wikipedia or Not Wikipedia?" is offered from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday,

March 16. This workshop highlights how to effectively and intelligently use one of the Internet's most unique and valuable collections of information.

"Social Bookmarking" is offered from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24. This introductory workshop explores social bookmarking sites.

"Online Portfolios" is offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13. Participants learn to use free online tools to create professional and accessible online portfolios.
