Hersey charges ahead with MSL East win

Defending Mid-Suburban League East girls volleyball champ Hersey started its conference schedule on Thursday night with a 25-14, 25-10 victory over visiting Prospect at the Ken Carter Gymnasium.

Senior setter Abby Fesl recorded 5 kills and 19 assists to help lead the Huskies (3-0, 1-0).

Erica Hill (5 kills), Ann Mullen-Muhr (4 kills), Gabriella Olhava (4), Liz Fuerst (3) and Megan Solans (2) were other top attackers for the Huskies, who received 11 digs from senior libero Taylor Schill.

Holly Hunt had 2 blocks and Carly Thompson 1 for the Knights (0-3, 0-1), who received 4 assists from setter Maggie Haaning.

Buffalo Grove d. Rolling Meadows: The visiting Bison (4-4, 1-0) prevailed 25-19, 2-18 behind Alaina Murphy (7 kills), Mary Zawlocki (4) and Monica Browne (3).

BG setter Marie Georgoulis handed out 18 assists and 10 digs.

Morgan Keller (6 kills), Lauren Sokolowski (3) and Hanna Mickey (2) led the attack for RM (1-3, 0-1). Jenny Vliet (9 assists) and Sami Kay (6) set the Mustangs offense.

Elk Grove d. Wheeling: Diamond Boyd (9 kills), Emily Wary (7) and Becca Siwicki (5) paced host Elk Grove in a 25-23, 25-19 MSL East triumph.

Kerry Souder (11 assists) and Christine Juhas (6 assist) set the offense for the Grens (2-1, 1-0).

Sydney Keith (6 kills), Jessi Zuba (5) and Amanda Mullin (5) paced the Wildcats (3-2, 0-1), who received 22 assists from Mullin.

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: Sophomore Lane Hindenburg put down 11 kills and Claire Brady added 2 for host Fremd (3-0, 1-0) in its 25-14, 25-16 MSL West triumph.

Senior libero Nina Scott was 17-of-17 serving for Fremd and also 6-of-7 serve receiving. Senior setter Marilyn Lortz handed out 19 assists.

Senior Destinee Young paced the Hawks (1-3, 0-1) with 5 kills and Becca Stoczynski added 3.

Schaumburg d. Conant: Senior Kelly Koutnik put down 8 kills and collected 6 digs as host Schaumburg won 25-18, 25-19 in its MSL West opener.

Other top attackers for the Saxons were Kiana Lewis (3 kills), Mary Camacho (2 kills), Laura Desautels (2) and Jada Blackwell (2), who handed out 7 assists. Teammate Marisa Christy collected 8 assists.

Regina d. St. Viator: Regina posted a 15-25, 25-21, 25-22 victory over the visiting Lions (2-6), who were led on attack by Mary Cleary (9 kills), Kristen Abrahamson (8) and Megan Mueller (5).

Junior setter Molly Ziegler was 12-of-13 serving with an ace and collected 26 assists.

Harper College d. McHenry: The Hawks came away with a 25-20, 22-25, 19-24, 25-16, 15-11 victory as Veronica Dabrowski (19 kills), Clara Moravec (10 kills), Erinn Hellweg (8) and Sarah House (7) led the attack.

Harper setter Kelly Sommers handed out 46 assists and had 19 digs for a double-double.
