The course: Buffalo Grove Golf Club is the home course for Buffalo Grove High School. “I think it’s a very fair course,” said Bison coach Matt Myers. “It will definitely allow the girls an opportunity to score well but also kind of play even to all the competition. It’s nice for us being on our home course. I think our girls appreciate that.” The last time the Bison advanced as a team to the sectional was 2005, and they hosted it that year, too.

First-place regional medalists: Prospect senior Allison Walsh shot a 3-over 73 to win the Hoffman Estates regional at the Bridges of Poplar Creek; Stevenson junior Stephanie Miller shot a 5-under par 67 to win the Lake Forest regional at Lake Bluff and Barrington freshman Julia Calbi shot a 3-under par 70 to win the Prairie Ridge regional at Prairie Isle.

Team outlook: Prospect is seeking a second straight sectional crown under coach Jim Hamann after winning at Rockford Guilford by 4 shots last year with a score of 315. Defending Class AA state champ Miller (70) won the individual competition while St. Viator’s Dana Gattone (77) was fourth and Buffalo Grove’s Grace Kil (79) tied for fifth. This year, Prospect has already recorded a school-record 308 twice, once in a dual meet against Loyola at the Mt. Prospect Golf Course and then in the regional at Bridges of Poplar Creek. The four-time defending Mid-Suburban League champs had four girls place in the top 10 in the regional. Allison Walsh’s medalist round of 73 tied the school record with current teammate Christine Garmoe and graduates Karly Grouwinkel and Michelle Caporusso. Barrington has also been scoring well late in the season and coach Jodi Schoeck has steered the Fillies to nine appearances in the state final. Calbi won the MSL and regional individual competition to help her team qualify for the sectional. The third MSL team participating in the sectional is Fremd under coach Christine Vlaming. The Vikes are trying to qualify for the state finals for the first time since 2002 when they won their only regional crown. Vikings junior Angie Kim finished a three-way tie for third with a 78 in the regional while senior teammate Madison Zyer gave them a big boost with her round of 80 for a fifth-place medal. “I played one of my best rounds at the regional, and I’m only hoping to do better at Buffalo Grove on Monday,” Zyer said. “I was so excited that we advanced as a team. We made it a goal to make it as a team to the sectional and as regional quickly approached, we realized how attainable that was.” This marks the first time the Vikings have advanced as a team under Vlaming, who took over the program five years ago. “We were all so excited for each other and for our program,” Zyer said. “It was the cherry on top of our season and making it to the sectional was my personal goal, too.”
