Malm takes back-to-back IPGA Match Play titles May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Curtis Malm won both player-of-the-year awards handed out by the Illinois PGA last year, and — judging by what happened in the first of the section’s four major championships of 2013 — there’s no reason to think he won’t pull off another sweep this season. Malm became the first player in 25 years to win back-to-back titles in the IPGA Match Play Championship when he defeated Doug Bauman 3 and 1 in Thursday’s title match at Kemper Lakes in Long Grove. In his fifth year as an assistant professional at St. Charles Country Club, Malm became the first repeat winner of the 62-year old tourney since Aurora’s Bob Ackerman triumphed in 1987 and 1988.

Revamped Fox Run course makes its debut May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
April storms created a nightmare for Chicago's golf course operators. While the storms were especially troublesome at Fox Run, the Elk Grove Park District facility that underwent a $2 million renovation for two years under the supervision of architect Gregory Martin, all 18 holes are open now. Synthetic turf delayed but Libertyville golf course set to reopen May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Under better circumstances, the greens and tees at the Liberyville golf course already would have been overhauled with a synthetic turf in advance of a new concept that to replace decades of village operation. But wet conditions on the course that borders the Des Plaines River has delayed that aspect. However, a turfless grand opening is set for May 18.

The PGA Tour dropped its doping case against Vijay Singh on Tuesday based on new information from the World Anti-Doping Agency, which said using deer antler spray is no longer prohibited because it contains such small amounts of a growth hormone factor.

Golf rates going up at Bartlett HillsApr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Certain rates at Bartlett Hills Golf Course are going up for the first time from as far back as 2007, in an attempt to bring in more revenue at the village-owned facility. The changes, which will go into effect on May 1, are expected to bring in about an extra $30,000 annually.

$5.5 million Settler’s Hill Golf Course revamp considered in phasesApr 25, 2013 12:00 AM
With golf course revenue income sliding for the past few years, Kane County Forest Preserve District commissioners Thursday inched toward implementing the first two phases of what could eventually be a $5.5 million renovation of the Settlers Hill Golf Course. The forest preserve doesn't have the cash to make that happen on its own. It'll need to crack open the tightly guarded account that stores revenue from the old landfill from the county.

Len Ziehm catches up with Crystal Lake's Joe Affrunti, who suffered a serious shoulder injury months after earning his PGA Tour card. Now he's sharpening his game on the Web.com tour and preparing for his return to the PGA Tour. "My first tournament back will probably be in Memphis (St. Jude Classic in June)," said Affrunti, "but I can play on the Web.com as long as my (PGA Tour qualifying) number doesn't come up."

Dry 2012 helped forest preserve golf courses turn profit Apr 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Drought-like conditions that kept many lawns brown last summer actually helped DuPage County Forest Preserve District golf courses earn some needed green. Forest preserve officials said their three courses turned a $314,780 profit in 2012, thanks in large part to the dry weather.
