Bergman gets Prospect rolling

Luke Bergman got Saturday off to a good start for himself and Prospect in a nonconference baseball doubleheader with Grant in Fox Lake.

Bergman led off the opener with a homer and went 5-for-6 in the two games as Prospect (8-1) came away with a sweep by 11-2 and 8-5 scores.

Ben Menich (2-0) had 14 strikeouts and just 1 walk as he won the opener. Jack Landwehr went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Brian Bauer was 2-for-4.

Landwehr (2-1) also went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles in Game 2 and got the victory with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk in 3 innings of 1-hit relief. Bergman was 3-for-3, Peter Bonahoom homered and doubled, Anthony Charnota homered and had 2 hits and Bauer and Kevin Miller also had 2 hits.

Meadows 5, Lake Forest 0: Junior Eric Lowe (2-1) delivered another solid pitching performance for Rolling Meadows (5-2) as he threw a 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Lowe lowered the Mustangs’ team ERA to 1.50 as 63 of his 95 pitches were strikes. He also had 2 hits along with Matt Hendricks and Joe Kropp.

Meadows also got contributions throughout its lineup as Mike Olson, Pat McGinn, Tyler Gaedele and Kevin Cwynar had hits and RBI. Hendricks also drove in a run.

Elk Grove 13, West Chicago 1: Pounding out a dozen hits, visiting Elk Grove defeated West Chicago 13-1 in a nonconference game. Peter Kinsella led the way for the Grens (5-5) with 3 hits, and Carl Sugihara and Cody Gustafson each had 2 hits. Jack Czeszewski had a double and single and Justin Arguelles doubled. Winning pitcher Dan Guido (3-2) worked 5 innings, striking out eight.

Hoffman 4, Lake Park 1: Mark Roberts and Jimmy Ward combined on a 5-hitter as Hoffman Estates (3-6) won its third straight game. Roberts went the first 4 innings for the Hawks, who have allowed only 1 run in each game of their current streak.

Ward and Kevin Grudzinski had 2 hits apiece, Trent Rehusch drove in 2 runs and Drew Roesch had a two-out RBI single in the second inning.

Leyden 11, Addison Trail 1: Justin Stawychny hit 2 homers and had 5 RBI and John Marino hit a 3-run homer for Leyden (7-0, 4-0) in the 5-inning West Suburban Gold win. Eric Palmer improved to 2-0.

Simeon 5, Hersey 3: Trevor Haas went 2-for-3 and Sean Thompson drove in 2 runs for Hersey (4-4). Mike Danielak took the loss despite allowing only 2 earned runs with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in 7 innings as he threw 66 of his 86 pitches for strikes.

Hersey had only 4 hits but couldn’t take advantage of 10 walks by Simeon pitching.

Antioch 5, Palatine 4: Kurt Becker had 2 doubles and an RBI, Dan Haze went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Joe Walsh went 2-for-3 as Palatine (6-7) outhit Antioch 11-6 in the loss.

Whitney Young sweeps Barrington: Jack Scheffler hit a 2-run homer in each game but it wasn’t enough for Barrington (0-10) to prevent 7-4 and 5-2 losses. Ricky Alfonso went 3-for-4 with a double in Game 2.

Maine South 6, Fremd 2: Fremd (3-6) scored 2 runs in the first but managed only 2 hits and Maine South finally broke through with a 5-run fifth.
