    For a second straight year, York’s 32-team field will dominate the local boys basketball landscape this holiday tournament season. Beyond the Dukes’ 41st annual Jack Tosh Holiday Tournament — featuring 10 DuPage County representatives — teams will spread out among 12 tournaments from Wheeling to Centralia.

    Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter was concerned going into Saturday’s game at West Chicago that his Royals would get caught up in all the hoopla surrounding Friday’s blowout win over archrival Elgin. As it turned out, Carter’s pregame warning wasn’t a prelude to anything bigger, as Larkin carried the momentum over and buried three 3-pointers in the game’s first 1:44, eventually turning back West Chicago 62-42 in Upstate Eight Conference River Division action.

    Geneva’s girls basketball team put on a first-quarter clinic during Friday night’s 64-38 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory over visiting West Chicago. Seven different players etched their names in the scorebook as the Vikings (7-0, 3-0) exploded out to a 33-9 first-quarter lead while shooting 74 percent from the field.

    Sometimes the final score is not a reflection of the way things played out during the game. Geneva (6-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten with Friday night’s 62-46 victory over visiting West Chicago (2-3, 2-1). However, the Wildcats proved pesky throughout the game, trailing 28-24 at halftime and 40-33 after 3 quarters before the Vikings finally put it away.

After three games — and three wins — they’d already eclipsed their entire victory total from last season. “It was funny because when we won our third we were like, ‘Oh, we already beat last year’,” said Warriors coach Chris Perkins. “But our goal wasn’t just to beat last year.”

On Friday night, the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0) began life as a member of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division in a positive manner by hanging on for a 58-56 victory over host Batavia (4-1, 0-1).
