Prairie Center production offers inside look at Gettysburg Address
On Nov. 2, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln received an invitation to share "a few appropriate remarks" at the consecration ceremony for a cemetery at the Gettysburg battlefield Nov. 19.
"Lincoln on the Gettysburg Address," a one-man, two-act presentation at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, depicts Lincoln's preparations for that brief, but important, address.
The audience will essentially witness him create his speech before their very eyes, learning along the way about the background and context to the familiar phrases. They will also gain an appreciation of the greater context of those two and half weeks during the civil war.
Created especially for the Prairie Center, "Lincoln on the Gettysburg Address" features projections and music of the era. The extensively researched presentation was written by Kevin Wood, based on primary sources such as Lincoln's drafts of his speech and the firsthand accounts of people who interacted with Lincoln during those eventful days.
