Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club Provides Happier Birthdays for Needy Children

The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) is pleased to announce that the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club recently donated $216 to sponsor four needy children through HSP's Children's Birthday Project (CBP). This generous donation will provide four low-income children with a 20-25 lb Birthday Box, containing toys, games, books, school supplies, small gifts, as well as a “Party-in-a-Box” with cake mix and other supplies for hosting a birthday party.

The club's contribution is one of many in a long history of supporting HSP programs and other local charities. With 35 active members, the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club, founded in 1959, indeed fulfills their mission of “supporting and raising the awareness of charitable organizations, individuals in need, and the community”. With a passion for helping local children, the club has supported the CBP in the past by providing “Party-in-a-Box” kits. A recent HSP speech detailing the CBP and its impact on the lives of area children really “hit home” according to one club member.

The Children's Birthday Project reaches out to children ages 3 to 12 who live in poverty in DuPage and Kane Counties. The goal is to create wonderful memories to last a lifetime. Very special and unforgettable birthday packages are placed in children's hands on their most special day — their birthdays! HSP will provide gifts to 700 impoverished children this year. With a donation of $54 per year, individuals or groups can ensure that a child receives gifts on his or her birthday and at Christmas.

The Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club is a non-partisan, non-denominational, volunteer women's organization. The club is open to adult women of all ages who live in Downers Grove and its surrounding communities. The club meets September through May on the fourth Tuesday of the month (3rd Tuesday in October and December 2008) at at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Lincoln Community Center, 935 Maple Ave., Downers Grove, IL.
