Workshops at CLC on Muslim-American students

Dr. Shabana Mir, author of the award-winning book"Muslim American Women on Campus: Undergraduate Social Life and Identity," will present two workshops at the College of Lake County Friday, April 8. The events are free.

"Empowering Muslim-American Students: The Realities of College and More" will be presented by Dr. Mir from 10 a.m. to noon in Room T347. It will include remarks by Dr. Mir and a CLC student panel discussing their experiences.

Following the presentation, CLC faculty and staff will participate in a workshop on how CLC can better support and retain Muslim students.

Dr. Mir's book explores the realities of college life for Muslim students. She is an assistant professor of anthropology at the American Islamic College/Chicago and an international speaker on gender, religion, education and politics.

A huge variety of artwork created by College of Lake County students will be on display April 8 through May 8 at the Robert T. Wright Community Gallery of Art on the Grayslake campus.

The 35th Annual CLC Student Art Competition is a juried exhibit featuring painting, drawing, computer graphics, photography, ceramics, jewelry, digital media and sculpture. The exhibit's juror is Rebecca Goldberg, an art lecturer at Lake Forest College.

At the opening reception, held from 6-8 p.m. April 8, CLC will award approximately $1,200 in cash prizes and purchase awards, including a $500 scholarship from the Lake County Art League and the $200 Steve Mendelson Memorial Award.

The winners will be announced at 7 p.m. The reception is free and will include refreshments and live music by members of the CLC jazz ensemble.
