CLC students win awards at Skyway Conference art competitions

Six College of Lake County art students won eight awards, including best in show, at the 2015 Illinois Skyway Art competition held at Morton College March 6.

In November, CLC writers won five awards at the Skyway Conference annual Literary Festival and Writing Competition, held at Waubonsee Community College.

The winning art students were Julie Caples of Mundelein for "Sweeper," an inkjet print that won best in show, and "Modern Man," an inkjet print; Emily Rose Davis of Deerfield for "Hansord," a wood-fired porcelain; Diana Devore of Antioch for "Dahlia," an oil on canvas; Kevin Ladesic of Gurnee for "End of Season," a watercolor; Douglas McDowell of Beach Park for "Yellow Orb #4," stoneware (award of excellence); and Ivan Vasquez of North Chicago for "El Joven," an oil on canvas (award of excellence), and for "Ali," Euan Uglow study, oil on canvas.

Bob Lossmann, professor of art and humanities and art department chair, attended the Skyway contest and said he was very pleased with the CLC students' success at this year's art competition.

"Our students' creativity and artistic abilities really stood out," he said.

At the Literary Festival and Writing Competition event Nov. 21, CLC students took home five out of 12 awards.

CLC student winners in the drama category were "Blowback" by Cam Flanagan of Mundelein, second place; and "At the Movies With Jesus" by Richelle Brinkley of Waukegan.

In fiction, second place went to Rodney Johnson of Ingleside for "A Nobleman of Grande Orcade." For nonfiction, Tomoko Funahashi of Buffalo Grove won first place for "Rain Must Fall" and Wendy Finger of Lake Bluff won third place for "Bad Drug."

"It takes a lot of courage and determination for students to submit their work for review. The writing programs here at CLC offer a welcoming, encouraging space for writers to explore their potential," said Michael Latza, English professor and editor of CLC's award-winning journal, Willow Review.

The Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference provides competition in athletics and academics for its eight member schools, which include Morton College in Cicero, Elgin Community College, Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Prairie State College in Chicago Heights and College of Lake County in Grayslake.
