Memorable effort powers Wheeling’s Peterson

Maryssa Peterson got a big boost from a little cheerleader Monday night at Arlington Lanes.

The Wheeling bowler’s 6-day-old nephew, Kayden, was in attendance — and although the odds are good the little guy won’t remember much of what transpired, Peterson, her teammates and fans sure will.

The junior fired the high game of the Mid-Suburban League meet — a 242 — which was 29 pins higher than her previous best-ever mark.

“I owe it all to Kayden,” said Peterson, who rolled five consecutive strikes midway through the game. “He’s my good luck charm. He’s awesome.”

The junior’s record setting evening helped Wheeling to a 9-0 victory over Barrington.

“Now my goal,” added Peterson, “is to keep practicing as hard as I can and try to beat that score.”

In other action, Prospect moved into first place in the MSL with a victory over Hersey as senior Kayla Jagus led the way with a 220 in game two.

“Our team has been doing a really good job this year,” said Jagus.

Jagus not only stars on the Knights bowling team but also gives a lot of her time back to the community by assisting younger children in a youth program at Mount Prospect Bible Church.

She made what she called a “big jump up” this season from JV last year to varsity now.

“There’s some pressure, trying to live up to the Prospect reputation,” said Jagus of the Knights yearly success on the lanes. “But our team is closer than ever and that motivates us.”

Prospect’s Kaitlynn Bieber contributed to the victory with a 621 series, while Katie Conrad’s 544 helped Palatine defeat Buffalo Grove.

Hoffman Estates junior Sarah Wille, who came into the night with the MSL league-leading average (201.78) fired a 576 as the Hawks defeated previously unbeaten Elk Grove 7-2.

Conant beat Fremd behind a 204 game by from Annie Witt, while Barrington’s Emily Sullivan excelled in the Fillies’ loss by posting a 190 in game one.

In the final match of the meet Jenny Klutts had a 574 as Rolling Meadows won over Schaumburg — but despite the loss Saxons senior Sam Hansel says the Saxons should have a banner year.

Hansel owns the top series in conference this year, a 656.

“I love our team,” said the senior. “We’ve got a lot to live up to, and I just want to go out there and make my teammates and my family proud, as well as all the great players who have gone through the program.

“It’s all about practice — practice makes perfect.”
