Young, Hoffman Estates top Schaumburg

Seniors Destinee Young (19 points, 17 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals) and Becca Stoczynski (10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 blocked shots, 2 steals) helped lead the way as Hoffman improved to 6-1 and 1-0.

Senior guard Shante Hill contributed 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

“Shante is playing great,” Nocella added. “She is playing great defense, getting steals, assists and shooting a very high percentage. She really helps us three or four offensive threats instead of two (Young and Stoczynski), and she’s playing real good defense.”

Andrea Wolinski (3 steals) scored a career-high 9 points for the Hawks.

“We just a had strong inside game and controlled the boards,” said Schaumburg coach Mike Nocella. “

Sophomore Mary Saitta chipped in 5 points off the bench for the hosts.

Senior guard Amanda Kelly led Schaumburg (3-4, 0-1) with 22 points, including 4 3-pointers while senior Carly Brossard added 8 and senior Riley Williams 6 (2 3-pointers)

Barrington 35, Conant 31: Barrington rallied from a 12-4 first-quarter deficit by outscoring the host Cougars 19-5 in the second quarter of the MSL West opener.

Senior Alexa Resch (13 points) and freshman Bryana Hopkins (9) led the Fillies (6-2, 1-0).

“We started out real slow,” said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. “Credit Conant. I thought they played real well defensively.”

Hopkins scored 8 of points in the second quarter and teammate Angie Kirchoff added all 5 of her points.

“Brooke Gunderson kind of put the team on her back defensively, picking up the pace for everyone,” Barreiro added. “Offensively Bryana was dynamite in second quarter.”

Freshman Megan Talbot grabbed 10 rebounds while Resch grabbed 9. “They both had big rebounds at key times,” Barreiro said. “Conant is always tough at home. They definitely did a nice job. Every game we are looking for small improvement.”

Junior Sarah Mazurek and sophomore Katie Lomas led Conant (1-6, 0-1) with 10 points apiece.

Elk Grove 35, Buffalo Grove 32: First-year Elk Grove coach Kathie Swanson won her first Mid-Suburban East game as the Grens (5-2, 1-0) received balanced scoring led by senior Daimond Boyd (10 points).

Juniors Taylor Brown and Melissa Solorio each added 6 points for the hosts.

Senior Alyssa Mills (9 points) and sophomore Julie Jambrone (7) led BG (2-5, 0-1).

Senior Bailey North returned from an ankle injury and scored 4 points for the Bison.

Stevenson 44, Hersey 42: Stevenson notched its first win in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic over Hersey (3-2, 2-1).

The Huskies were led by junior Morgan Harris, who scored 15 points with three 3 -pointers.

Senior Erica Hill added 11 points with 12 rebounds and senior Casey Weyhrich chipped in 7 points.

“I was disappointed in our defense,” said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. “It had been tough in previous games.

“In the second half, we did a good job keeping the game close. But they made the plays when they had to.”

In the other game, Marian Catholic posted a 57-14 victory over host Maine West (1-6, 0-3).
