New Elgin Community College students will preview the college experience both academically and socially during a series of events on Friday, Aug. 17.

The events also will assist students and their families in getting acclimated to the college before classes begin Monday, Aug. 20.

The day begins with a new student convocation ceremony at 11 a.m. in Building J, the Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin. New students and their families should arrive at the college by 10:30 a.m.

Dressed in full academic attire, ECC President David Sam, Ph.D., JD, and other college administrators and faculty, will set the tone for students to excel in their studies. Sam and Robert McBride, EdD, Community College District 509 board of trustees chair, also will encourage students with messages of success.

Other events include:

• A Campus Jam barbecue at noon in the grassy area near Buildings H and J where students can interact with ECC staff and students while enjoying food, music, games, and prizes.

• New student workshops at 1:15 p.m. where students and their families will learn more about the college experience awaiting them.

• A campus tour at 2:15 p.m. where students, guided by an orientation leader, learn the locations of their classes.

• Return at 8 p.m. for a showing of the movie "The Hunger Games" near the Spartan Field on the west end of campus along Spartan Drive. Students can meet with representatives from ECC clubs and organizations.
