Barrington beats Schaumburg

The mentor defeated the pupil Saturday night.

Barrington girls basketball coach Babbi Barreiro watched her Fillies post a 41-32 triumph Friday night over the host Schaumburg Saxons, who are coached by former Barrington standout forward Ashley Berggren.

Senior guard Abby Kirchoff scored a season-high 23 points with 10 rebounds and 4 steals to lead the Fillies (12-6, 2-2) while classmate Sam Maasarani added 9 points from three 3-point baskets.

“Abby played one of her best game ever,” Barreiro said of the three-year starter. “She had an awesome offensive game and played great defense, too. She made so much happen for us.

“Schaumburg played hard. It was very physical game. I never felt comfortable.”

The Fillies led by as many as 14 points.

“But Schaumburg would never go away,” added Barreiro, who was Berggren’s head coach for one season in the early 1990s.

“They definitely outebounded us and that was very costly.

“Ashley has her kids playing hard and working hard. I felt our kids responded very well to the physical play of Schaumburg. We were diving and getting to loose balls on the floor, too. It was definitely a great effort.”

Jenna Gerber (10 rebounds) paced the Saxons (7-10, 1-3) with 12 points while Amanda Kelly hit a 3-pointer for the hosts. Alyssa Saklak pulled down 8 rebounds for Schaumburg.

“We did well on the boards but we couldn’t convert them into baskets,” Berggren said. “Abby Kirchoff came out really strong in the second half for Barrington. Jenna Gerber had a good game for us.”

Conant 39, Palatine 29: Senior Kelly Lomas led the way with 19 points and classmate Alyssa Rawleigh chipped in a dozen including three 3-point baskets for host Conant (11-6, 2-2) in the MSL West.

“Palatine played hard, they’re a tough club,” said Cougars coach Dan Travers, whose team is now 2-0 on its home floor this season.

The Cougars were coming off a 46-20 loss at Prospect Tuesday night.

“We played with a purpose, we wanted to rebound from that last game,” Travers added.

“The girls responded well with a good week of practice. They were really focused and wanted to win, especially being at home.”

Sophomore McKenzie Wiedemann was the top scorer for Palatine (6-12, 0-4) with 7 points.

Rolling Meadows 47, Elk Grove 36: Host Rolling Meadows (12-6, 3-1) stayed in contention for the MSL East as senior guard Maddie Conlin tossed in game-high 17 points with four 3-pointers.

Freshman Jackie Kemph added 10 for the Mustangs and classmate Jennifer Vliet 8.

“Conlin and Kemph really carried us,” said Meadows coach Todd Hatfield, whose defense pitched an 8-0 shutout in the fourth quarter. “Jennifer Vliet and Alexis Glasgow (also a freshman) gave us some great minutes.

“Ryan (Kirkorsky, Elk Grove coach) has his kids playing really hard. He is doing a great job with them.” Senior Leah Miller paced Elk Grove (8-11, 1-3) with 11 points that included three 3-pointers. Maggie Fries added 7 for the Grens.

Buffalo Grove 60, Wheeling 44: Talk about balanced scoring. Buffalo Grove coach Pat Dudle got it from his Bison Saturday.

Senior Andrea DiPrima (16 points) led five Bison in double figures as host BG improved to 6-11 and 2-2 in the MSL East.

Senior Emily Georgoulis added 11 points for the winners while junior Emily Cho, sophomore Bailey North and senior KC Dunne each added 10.

The Bison converted eight 3-points baskets, led by DiPrima (4) and Dunne (2).

Junior Kellie Kuzmanic led Wheeling (3-15, 1-3) with 15 points while senior Kelsey Maczko and junior Leah Malsom each chipped in 12.

Resurrection 45, St. Viator 31: Sam Ruehle scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Resurrection (10-8) in the nonconference match in Chicago.

The Lions slipped to 10-9 heading into Monday night’s Season’s End tourney game (5:30 p.m.) against Riverside-Brookfield at Hersey.
