Hersey stuns Elk Grove

Hersey's biggest win in coach Molly Freeman's three seasons handed the Daily Herald's top-ranked Elk Grove softball team its first loss in the Mid-Suburban League and third all season.

Senior Taylor Reeves' two-out, two-strike base hit up the middle brought home sophomore Haley Henriksen from third base in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Huskies (8-21, 4-10) a 1-0 victory over the visiting Grenadiers (27-3, 13-1).

Winning pitcher Aubrey Fulton, a senior, threw a 6-hitter with 3 strikeouts to edge sophomore Dani Goranson (16-2), who allowed only 3 hits and struck out eight for the MSL East champs.

"Definitely our biggest win since I've been here," Freeman said. "I'm so proud of these girls. They were loose and feeling good. And they did everything they needed to do. They're a good group and I'm really proud of the effort they gave."

Pinch hitter Val Burke led off the bottom of the seventh by reaching on an outfield error. Henriksen followed with a bunt single for runners on first and second.

Alyssa Kieffer's sacrifice bunt got the runners to second and third before the first out of the inning was recorded on a fielder's choice out at the plate.

Reeves then came up with the game-winner on a two-strike pitch.

"The girls stuck with it," Freeman said. "We didn't have a ton of hits. But the kids just kept battling.

"Aubrey was awesome. She has been getting stronger and stronger every game and was just outstanding this time."

Sophomore Melissa Cecala also had a hit for the Huskies. Kristen Cetkovic (2-for-2, walk) and Amanda Gattone (2-for-3) led the offense for Elk Grove, which stranded nine runners.
