A Scholarly Example
Glenbard West graduate Janet Vazquez is currently in her second semester at the College of DuPage thanks to a full two-year scholarship presented to her by Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare. She is taking a full course load, working two jobs and serving as a role model for her two younger sisters. Each spring the GEIW scholarship committee works closely with the counseling staffs at Glenbard West and Glenbard South to award full time two year scholarships to graduating seniors. These recipients are ranked highly within their class, have solid test scores, have to desire to succeed, and could greatly benefit from the financial assistance. Committee member Julie Kennenbeck recalled, ""During our interview, Janet presented herself as if interviewing was her business. Her poise, grace, humor and maturity was that of a well-educated professional. This isn't far from the truth. Janet has been groomed since a young age to look for personal growth in every opportunity given. To embrace employment and observe success both through her colleagues and her customers. She values each interaction as a way to better herself. Never negative as some teens would be of the need to hold two jobs during high school, Janet accepted this responsibility with a humble grace and a means to a better life. Janet attributes her drive and success to her Mother, her role model, who has instilled these characteristics in her life. " The committee continues throughout the duration of the scholarship to monitor students' progress and act as mentors when and if needed.
Although Janet says she feels lucky to be the chosen recipient of the GEIW scholarship, it is GEIW that feels lucky to find such a dynamic person. This scholarship allows this hardworking teen to build a savings to help ensure her future. Janet's motto is "good decisions make for a good life" and she lives by this motto, as shown by her full course load, her job at Medinah Country Club, and her Shift Manager position at Einstein's all the while she still helps take care of her sisters before and after school. Janet humbly credits her Mom and her guidance counselors at GBW for establishing her outlook. By their example she has learned that you have success by working hard.
GEIW is delighted to be assisting in the intellectual growth of such a fine young woman. Established in 1926, the members of GEIW have made a commitment to ensure the well being of Glen Ellyn's children for 88 years. Throughout the year, GEIW's 50 members volunteer 150 hours at Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, Peoples Resource Center and Family Shelter Services. The organization also supports 20 local charities and as well as 2 college scholarships to College of DuPage to students at Glenbard West and South.
Each spring the residents of Glen Ellyn and neighboring communities tour beautiful homes on the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Housewalk. A springtime tradition, Housewalk is GEIW's largest fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting their charities and scholarship fund. This years Housewalk will be held on Friday, May 16th 2014.
