Gregory Middle School Student Council Gives 100 Toys to Needy Children

The Student Council of Gregory Middle School in Naperville has donated 100 new toys to the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) to help needy children in the area. HSP, through their Children's Birthday Project, supplies gifts to 700 needy children in DuPage and Kane Counties on their birthdays and at Christmas. Gregory Middle School has been supporting HSP for two decades, by providing funds, toys, and food to the Carol Stream based charity's programs.

Eighty members of the Gregory Middle School Student Council donated the toys through an “It's not your birthday” party. The party was just like any other birthday party. The children brought a gift as admission, played games, and ate cake. However, since it was an “It's not your birthday” party the gifts brought were donated to the HSP to give to needy children. Laurie Zalaznik, the student council advisor, said “we like doing projects for the HSP because the students can have fun while socializing and do great things for the needy.”

The toys will be used for HSP's Children's Birthday Project which provides a child ages 3-11 with a 25-30 lb. Birthday Box containing 6 new books, 6-15 new toys, school supplies, stuffed animals, one new game, various other gifts such as bubbles, card games, mini toys, and a Party-in-a-Box filled with all the items necessary to have a birthday party. The child receives the birthday package the week of their birthday, and provides a memorable “Special Day” for an impoverished child in our community. A sponsorship for a child is only $54 and also includes gifts at Christmas time, back-to-school supplies, and the child's family becomes eligible for the HSP's summer-time Feed the Kids Program as well.

Karole Kettering, Co-founder and Executive Director of HSP, said HSP was happy to have the continued support of The Gregory Middle School Student Council. She said, “It is so wonderful to see young people getting involved in helping those less fortunate than themselves, and, through Gregory Middle School, HSP has had hundreds of wonderful young people support us in our mission to provide relief to the needy over the years.”

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
