Wheaton Kiwanis continue 24-year tradition of supporting seniors

The Kiwanis Club of Wheaton donated $800 to support a needy senior citizen through the Senior Citizen Project of the Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) which serves Dupage County. The club has been supporting HSP for over twenty years not only by funding local senior citizens in need, but also by providing volunteer drivers to deliver groceries to the seniors, and by sponsoring HSP's other programs to provide gifts and food to impoverished children.

The Kiwanis Club of Wheaton, which just celebrated its 60th anniversary, has dedicated itself to helping children and communities in need through a number of local charities like the HSP, as well as providing support to a number of regional and international causes. In the following months the club will be preparing for their annual Holiday Dinner Party for Children, which takes place in Marion Park in early December. They meet every Tuesday at Wheaton Park District's Memorial Park.

The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries that include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishable foods, personal care items and paper products. The seniors also receive a monthly “Secret Pal” gift and a Meal of the Month provided by HSP's volunteers.

Karole Kettering, HSP Founder and Executive Director, says the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton's support for HSP dates back almost to HSP's inception. She says “they have been invaluable in supporting HSP's mission to alleviate hunger.”

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
