Advocate Sherman recognized for excellence in lactation care

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and International Lactation Consultant Association have recently recognized Advocate Sherman Hospital for excellence in lactation care.

Advocate Sherman Hospital has received the IBCLC Care Award in recognition for staffing professionals who hold the prestigious International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification and providing a lactation program for breastfeeding families.

In addition, the facility demonstrated that it has recently completed activities that help protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.

"Advocate Sherman Hospital has an amazing lactation team that is committed to breastfeeding being a top priority," commented Fran Teti-Teal, director of the Family Birthing Center at Advocate Sherman Hospital. "They were integral in educating staff and physicians on the benefits of breastfeeding and how to assist our moms to breastfeed successfully."

Advocate Sherman Hospital is a designated Baby-Friendly hospital which uses evidenced-based practice with their lactation services and has dedicated certified lactation consultants. They are available seven days a week during day and evening hours. The lactation team is responsible for supporting the hospital's outpatient lactation clinic, a lactation phone line, a breastfeeding support group, and the patients who deliver at the Family Birthing Center.

As allied health care professionals with the leading internationally recognized certification for professional lactation services, IBCLC professionals work in hospitals and birthing centers, clinics, public health agencies, private practice, community settings, government agencies, and in research. There are currently more than 28,000 such professionals in 105 countries worldwide that are IBCLCs (www.iblce.org), a program independently accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies.
