COD Offers Classes Promoting Firearm Safety this Summer and Fall

The Homeland Security Training Institute at College of DuPage is offering a variety of classes dedicated to firearm safety this summer and fall. All classes will be held in the Homeland Education Center on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.

The HSTI is offering several two-day, 18-hour Concealed Carry Classes led by certified concealed carry instructor and distinguished firearm expert Michelle Quesada. Participants will receive all the elements of state-required training, including basic principles of marksmanship; care, cleaning, loading and unloading of a concealable firearm; firearm safety; state and federal laws relating to ownership, storage, carry and transport of a firearm; and weapon and handling and legal qualification. In addition, students will gain hands-on, real-world experience through the use of a state-of-the-art concealed carry firearm simulator and the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System (MILES). Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28; Saturday, July 11, and Sunday, July 12; Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23; and Saturday, Sep. 19, and Sunday, Sep. 20.

Concealed Carry: Shooter Decision Making and the Law is a four-hour class which combines the use of a decision-making simulator with a discussion of the law related to Concealed Carry. Participants will engage in real-life interactive video simulations to strengthen their knowledge and increase their responsibility in carrying a concealed weapon. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 6, and Saturday, Aug. 1.

NRA Basic Pistol Shooter is an eight-hour course which includes classroom and range time learning to shoot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, with a focus on how to be a responsible gun owner. Participants learn NRA rules for safe gun handling, firearm care and maintenance, shooting fundamentals and range rules. In addition, participants will take the Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a certificate of completion. Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, and Saturday, Aug. 29.
