CLC Theatre presents 'Crimes of the Heart'

"Crimes of the Heart" by Beth Henley will be presented by the College of Lake County Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15, and Thursday through Saturday Nov. 20-22; and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in the Studio Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts, 19351 W. Washington St., Grayslake.

This warmhearted comedy examines the plight of three Mississippi sisters betrayed by their passions. It won both the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. The play is directed by Brian Gill, CLC Theatre Department adjunct instructor.

According to Gill, the play examines families, which can both inspire a profound sense of loyalty and be the source of deep rooted resentments.

"'Crimes of the Heart' is a play about black sheep; the spinster, the rebel and, of course, the killer," Gill said. "I have always been keenly interested in black sheep, so I jumped at the chance to direct the play, which is both joyfully humorous and painfully honest.

"The failing health of the family patriarch, combined with a shocking crime committed by the youngest sister, brings the women home again, where they face old squabbles, culpabilities, loves and ghosts; ghosts of their childhoods, past relationships and lost parents.

"Somehow, through the uncertainty and unease raging about them, all three women manage to navigate their way through the chaos toward (we hope) the light at the end of the tunnel. They do this because, despite all of their baggage with each other, they remember one simple truth: they are sisters, family. And families stick together. Especially the black sheep."
