Erin Merryn to receive Wendell Jones Award

The Northwest Suburban Alliance on Domestic Violence will honor Erin Merryn at the inaugural Wendell Jones Awards Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at the Harper College Wojcik Conference Center, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.

Merryn, a survivor turned advocate, worked to pass Erin’s Law requiring Illinois public schools teach sexual abuse prevention.

The Wendell Jones Award is named after the late state Sen. Wendell Jones of Palatine, who founded the alliance, helped secure funding for the WINGS safe house and established the Illinois Family Violence Coordinating Council for the 3rd Municipal Court District in Rolling Meadows. Other recipients include Michael Bischof of the Cynthia L. Bischof Memorial Foundation; Rita Canning, chairman of the WINGS board; Jim Huenink, executive director at Northwest CASA; and the Children’s Advocacy Center of North and Northwest Cook County.
