Cohn delivers as St. Viator edges Vernon Hills

Lauren Cohn scored 2 goals and Micaela Lonigro added 1 as St. Viator edged Vernon Hills 3-2 on Saturday morning to claim the championship of the Class 2A Amundsen regional in Chicago.

The No. 4-seeded Lions (11-7) advance to the Lake sectional and will face top-seeded Deerfield in a semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

“Lauren stepped up big,” said Lions coach Mike Taylor. “And Chloe Luthringshausen was dangerous all the time.”

Luthringshausen assisted on both of Cohn’s goals.

The first one gave the Lions a 1-0 lead at intermission.

The Cougars got the equalizer early in the second half.

Heidi VanBloomer (assisted by Kaitlyn Gramins) and Haley Lieberman (unassisted) scored for Vernon Hills in the second half.

A penalty kick by Lonigro and Cohn’s second goal gave Viator the win.

Goalkeeper Sam Stanley made 3 saves for the Lions while Allison Clatch had 7 for Vernon Hills.

“We came out a little flat to start the second half and that hurt us,” Taylor added. “That’s when they scored their goals.”
