Harper College nursing students help administer flu shots

Flu season is upon us and Harper College nursing students are here to help.

All 25 students from the college’s LPN program are helping administer flu shots at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, 800 Biesterfield Road, in Elk Grove Village. This year, Alexian Brothers has mandated that all personnel — from contracted workers to volunteers — receive a flu vaccine as well, which has increased both the number of flu shots being given to about 5,000 and the need for help in administering them.

The LPN students have been giving flu vaccines to hospital workers and volunteers outside the Employee Health Services office throughout October, in some instances giving as many as 200 vaccines in one six-hour shift.

For the Harper students, the chance help give flu shots in the community has been a great learning experience.

“It builds up their confidence in giving injections,” said Dietra McCroy, clinical supervisor in the college’s Nursing program. “They’re getting opportunities that other colleges aren’t giving their students.”

In addition to certificates in Practical Nursing and Nurse Assisting, Harper College offers a degree in Registered Nursing. For more information on the Nursing programs, contact (847) 925-6533.
