Hersey tops Buffalo Grove for key MSL East win

Hersey took a key step toward what would be a sixth straight Mid-Suburban East crown, and with senior Amanda Petro leading the way, the Huskies did it in record fashion.

Petro broke pool records in the 200-yard IM and in the 100 backstroke as Hersey bettered host Buffalo Grove 116-70.

Petro’s winning effort in the 200 IM of 2:09.58 broke the mark set by Buffalo Grove’s Erin Rodriguez in the 2005 season.

In the 100 backstroke, Petro won in 58.25, breaking by more than two seconds the mark set by Hersey’s Kathy Kielty in 1997. The backstroke effort led a 1-2-3 Huskies sweep with Kelly Johnson and Sarah Zidek.

Hersey’s Sarah Petro, Lara Derrig and Abat Zeynep paced another 1-2-3 Hersey sweep in the breaststroke, and the Huskies also won the 400 free relay.

Buffalo Grove senior Veronika Jedryka won decisively in 50 free (25.5) and 100 free (54.33), and the Bison got a 1-2 finish in the 100 fly with Margaret Lotzer and Sara Morosan. Lotzer also won the 200 free and had a leg on the winning 200 free relay with Jedryka, Morosan and Callie Fasching.

Hannah Bovino, Megan Nocita and Anne Johnson provided big points for Hersey with a 1-2-3 finish in diving.

Prospect d. Elk Grove: The host Grens won eight of the meet’s first nine races, but Prospect delivered a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke with Macey Berkley, Abby Younger and Kallie Shields and then got a 1-2 finish in the 400 free relay to pull out a 108-77 victory.

Berkley, a sophomore, also provided a key win in the 500 free for Prospect, and Knights sophomore Dana Liva won diving with a stellar score of 259.10.

Individual double winners for Elk Grove included Simona Kurta (200 free, 100 fly), Angelica Ford (200 IM, 100 free) and Nikki Sugihara (50 free, 100 back). Jackie Hirschauer joined that trio for a winning effort in the 200 free relay, and the Grens’ medley of Sugihara, Dominik Struk, Kurta and Inah Enolva also was a winner.

Barrington d. Palatine: The visiting Fillies earned a 1-2 finish in the medley relay, got a pair of individaul wins from swim-anything freshman Kirsten Jacobsen and a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100-meter breaststroke to pull out a 115-70 victory at Palatine.

Jacobsen had the top finish in 50 free and edged Palatine’s Tess O’Brien to win the 100 backstroke.

O’Brien, also a freshman, edged Barrington’s Ellie Menso just two races earlier to win the 400 freestyle.

Other winners for Palatine included Laura Mayer in the 200 IM and Lily Zahn in the 100 fly.

Barrington junior Mekenna Scheitlin took top honors in the 100 and 200 freestyles, and Tiffany Soto won diving for the Fillies. Barrington’s breaststroke sweep was accomplished by Kayla Widdowson, Andrea Vega and Olivia Hoffman.

Fremd d. Conant: Conant sophomore Allison Cicero won the 200- and 400-meter freestyles, but the visiting Vikings took top honors in the rest of the races, plus diving, in delivering a 138-48 victory.

Double winners for Fremd included senior Breanna Anderson (200 IM, 100 fly) and sophomore Erica King (50 free, 100 free).

Rolling Meadows d. Wheeling: Neeka Szacilo won the 100 and 200 freestyles, and the visiting Mustangs took both freestyle relays to net a 101-90 victory over Wheeling.

Jessica Dykstra won the 50 free and had legs on both of the Wildcats’ winning relays.

Theresa Godlewski won the 100 fly, the 100 back and joined Shannon Richards, Emily Zieger and Michaela Rozmus on the winning medley relay.

Schaumburg d. Hoffman Estates: Ema Cigerova (200 IM, 100 back), Ellen Nolley (200 free, 400 free) and Sydney Skibinski (100 fly, 100 breast), and Cigerova had legs on the Saxons’ winning medley and 400 free relays as host Schaumburg won 107-76.

Jessica Sullivan (50 free), Allie Ouimet (100 fly) and Audry Tonkinson (diving) were winners for the Hawks.
