Harper’s art department welcomes Utah artists

Sculptural paintings, large panel paintings and collages are on display at Harper College as the Art Department hosts “Continuum,” an exhibition by Utah-based artist and Brigham Young University professor Sunny Belliston-Taylor.

The Harper exhibition marks Taylor’s first Chicago-area solo show. Jason Peot, associate professor of Art and curator of exhibitions, chose Taylor for the exhibit after being impressed by her piece “Cornered” at the college’s annual National Juried Art Exhibition in 2010, where it showed as part of the prestigious Small Works Exhibition.

“I was drawn to the format and to the mix of formalist painting with physical elements,” Peot says of Taylor’s work. “I thought that kind of mixing of mediums and genres would be interesting for the students to experience.”

Twenty of Taylor’s pieces, including “Cornered,” are viewable from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p. m. weekdays in Harper’s Art Exhibition Space, Room C200, Building C. The exhibit closes Thursday, Sept. 20. Taylor will visit campus for a public reception and a discussion of her work at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Exhibition Space.
