Northwest roundup/Fremd pulls upset

Fremd didn’t start out by following the typical upset script in its boys volleyball regional semifinal Tuesday night in Palatine.

But the 12th-seeded Vikings still came back to pull off the upset and top No. 5 Libertyville 16-25, 25-14, 25-19. That puts them back at home for today’s 7 p.m. regional championship match against No. 4 Buffalo Grove, a 25-22, 25-18 winner over No. 13 Palatine.

Eric Scott and John Morrison had 10 kills apiece, David Kim was 74-for-75 setting with 20 assists and Chris Marsuli had 24 digs for the Vikings.

Evan Bunnetto had 10 kills and Sam Wacker had 9 kills for BG (24-12) in its victory. Matt Bloom had 31 assists and Michael Maley had 21 digs.

Eric Gabbard had 6 kills and 8 digs and Kyle Obernesser was 47-for-47 setting with 13 assists for Palatine.

Elk Grove d. Bartlett: Michal Kawa had 15 kills, 7 digs and 7 blocks as Elk Grove (29-7), the top seed in the Elgin sectional, won its own regional semifinal 25-16, 25-12 over No. 16 Bartlett. Aaron Kraus had 7 kills, Jake Braceros had 3 kills, 6 digs and 2 aces and Jeff Miceli was 57-for-57 setting with 22 assists.

The Grenadiers play for the regional title at 7 p.m. today against No. 8 York, a 25-17, 25-22 winner over No. 9 Wheaton Academy.

Barrington d. Lakes: Jeff Hochstein, Peter Van Fossam and Kevin Eiring had 5 kills apiece as Barrington, the top seed in its sectional, rolled past No 16 Lakes 25-15, 25-10 in the Waukegan regional semifinal.

Taylor Ganzer had 20 assists and 8 digs and Austin Czarnecki had 15 digs for the Broncos, who play for the Waukegan regional title at 7 p.m. today against No. 9 Deerfield, a 25-19, 25-19 winner over No. 8 Highland Park.

New Trier d. Wheeling: No. 13 seed Wheeling (15-18) looked to continue its late-season surge but its upset bid in its own regional fell short to No. 4 New Trier 22-25, 25-18, 25-22. Brandon Yacu had 9 assists, 6 digs and 2 block, Kevin Leska had 7 kills and 3 blocks, Brandon Fox had 6 kills, Mike Taylor had 13 assists and Frank Stankowicz had 11 digs for the Wildcats.

Addison Trail d. Hoffman Estates: Sean Habal had 5 kills and Patrick Tednes had 11 digs for No. 14 Hoffman Estates in a 25-14, 25-23 loss to No. 3 Addison Trail in the Glenbard North regional.

Prospect d. Notre Dame: No. 9 Prospect advanced to the Northside Prep regional final with a 25-17, 25-15 win over No. 8 Notre Dame. The Knights will play for the regional title at 7 p.m. today against top-seed Glenbrook North, a 25-15, 25-11 winner over No. 16 Maine West.
