Schaumburg tops St. Viator for fifth in tourney

The only two area girls volleyball teams in Saturday’s Schaumburg Invite met in their final match.

The host Saxons defeated St. Viator 25-16, 26-24 to take fifth place in their own eight-team tournament.

Cary-Grove won the title with a 25-15, 25-20 triumph over St. Charles North.

Schaumburg (15-12) went 3-2 in the invite, and was led on attack by Kelly Koutnik (25 kills), Kiara Lewis (21), Meghan Falsey (20), Bria Hailey (17) and Jenna Gerber (12).

Falsey (32 assists) also kept busy running the offense along with Sam Mellert (41 assists). Michelle Klages (44 digs) and Whitney Grossman (36) patrolled the back row.

The Saxons delivered 23 aces on the day, led by Koutnik’s 7 and 4 apiece from Falsey and Lewis.

St. Viator (14-17) went 2-3 in the tourney and was led by at the Schaumburg tournament.

Senior Emily Williams served a team-high 11 aces with 75 assists from 224 sets.

Her top targets were Lauren Falotico (31 kills), Rachel Horvath (22), Alex Byskosh (10) and Olivia Nuelle (8).

Williams also added 7 kills and 20 digs.

Falotico led in the back row with 38 digs while Megan Mueller had 33 and Horvath 21. Horvath also had a team-high 8 blocks.

St. Charles East Invite: Barrington won its two matches on Friday night in the Mizuno Cup hosted by St. Charles East at the Great Lakes Volleyball Center to give coach Rob Ridenour 20 wins in his rookie season as the Fillies coach.

Barrington (21-5) dropped its three matches on Saturday and finished seventh in the high-profile tourney.

Benet (24-3), which defeated Barrington 25-9, 25-16 on Saturday, capped a dominating march through the Mizuno Cup with a 25-16, 25-12 win over St. Charles East in the championship.

Top attackers for the Fillies in the tourney were Peyton Lang (47 kills), Lauren Shechtman (45) and Julia Thompson (38). Shechtman had 14 blocks while Lauren Dunseith added 7 with 109 assists.

Olivia Szuzskiewicz (52 digs) paced the back row followed by Amanda Dee (43) and Thompson (35).

Crystal Lake Central Invite: Elk Grove was led on attack by Diamond Boyd (34 kills) and Mallorie DeWitt (22) while setters Christine Juhas and Kerry Souder each had 41 assists.

Boyd also had 9 aces while Juhas had 5.
