Tureck pitches in to Barrington's strong start

Tyler Tureck watched, waited and finally went to warm up again.

It was definitely a good top of the first inning for Barrington and Tureck and a long 25 minutes for host Schaumburg in Thursday's Mid-Suburban West baseball game.

The senior left-hander then made his first trip to the mound and pitched the way he should with an 8-run lead.

Tureck threw a 2-hitter, didn't give up an earned run and didn't issue a walk as Barrington (9-8, 2-2) cruised to a 12-2 victory in five innings.

"It was tough at the beginning to get going but it was great to see the run support at the beginning," Tureck said after throwing 46 of his 68 pitches for strikes. "That takes all the pressure off a pitcher at the beginning.

"You don't want to overthink when you have a big inning and think you can take it easy. You still have to go after them."

Tureck (3-1) did with the wind blowing in from center field with his fastball, curveball and changeup. He had an easy 9-pitch first and overcame the Broncos' 6 errors.

"That's what he does," said Barrington coach Jim Hawrysko after Tureck went to only one three-ball count. "He's pitched well all year. He's around the zone and he's sneaky a little bit."

And the Broncos took full advantage of 3 walks and 4 errors in their first-inning outburst. They scored 4 runs before their first hit from sophomore catcher Max Redpath (2-for-3) in his varsity debut.

No. 9 hitter Jack Kurcab (2-for-3) and leadoff man John O'Connell (2-for-4) followed with RBI singles in the Broncos' revamped lineup.

"We were able to take advantage of putting the ball in play for the first time all year," Hawrysko said. "We're starting to hit the ball the other way and starting to do the things we're supposed to do."

That wasn't the case for Schaumburg (5-8, 1-3) after two solid games where it beat Fremd 2-1 and lost 3-2 to Glenbrook South. Eight of the runs it allowed were unearned as it finished with 5 errors.

"We've talked about it, but we just don't concentrate and bear down when the game starts," said Schaumburg coach Paul Groot of a consistent pattern of giving up first-inning runs. "We have to come ready to play and not be behind the eight-ball, literally."

Kevin Hilliard tripled and scored on an error for Schaumburg in the third. Junior lefty Roger Lane allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts in 22/3 scoreless relief innings.

Jack Scheffler had a first-inning sacrifice fly and a double for Barrington. Ricky Alfonso had a 2-run single and Anthony Brignola and Derek Foderaro had RBI singles in a 4-run third.

And the Broncos host West co-leader Palatine (10-7, 3-1) today with consecutive wins after a four-game losing streak.

"We felt good that we could turn it around and we did," Tureck said. "It's wide open and 2-2 is fine. We can definitely bounce back from that and take conference."

Fremd 14, Glenbard North 11: Fremd (7-6) was outhit 17-9 but used a 6-run third and 8-run fourth to take a 14-3 lead in the nonconference victory. Chris Brady was the winning pitcher and Zenon Kolakowski doubled.

Leyden 8, Oak Park 7: Carlos Olavarria's tiebreaking two-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh capped a Leyden (13-5) comeback from a 7-2 deficit for its seventh straight win in the West Suburban crossover.

Leyden tied it with a 5-run sixth as Adrian Ruiz and Jeremy Stawychny had 2-run doubles. John Marino (2-for-4, 2 RBI) started the seventh by beating out an infield hit.

Olavarria and Eric Palmer also went 2-for-4 for Leyden.

Lakes 14, St. Viator 2 (5 inn.): Lakes (12-7) hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the first inning and six in the five-inning nonconference win at St. Viator (8-6). Jack Czeszewski homered for the Lions.
