New resources for watching birds in DuPage County

The DuPage Birding Club recently announced three new resources for local birders to maximize their birding opportunities within the county.

In response to COVID-19 guidelines that restricted meetings, field trips, and other forms of social engagement, the DuPage Birding Club developed new assets to help birders mostly left on their own to navigate bird identification challenges during spring migration and the summer nesting period.

The first is the DBC YouTube Education Channel currently featuring 15 videos focused on bird identification tips for troublesome species, birding skill essentials, and special birds within the county.

New videos are introduced every Wednesday morning. The videos can be found at www.youtube.com/dupagebirdingclub.

The second is a series of 15 PDFs describing DuPage Birding Club Birding Hotspots within the county.

These site profiles feature an insider's view of how to bird various locations for best results.

New hotspots roll out monthly at dupagebirding.org/dupage-hotspots/.

The third and final resource is a newly refreshed DuPage County Birding Checklist, which defines the abundance of all regularly occurring species in DuPage County across seven bands — Winter, Early Spring, Late Spring, Summer, Post Breeding, Early Fall and Late Fall.

The update is the first since 2010 and is an invaluable aid to birders who want to know what to expect in different seasons.

A printable copy resides at www.dupagebirding.org under Birding DuPage.

The club welcomes birders of all ages and levels of experience to access these resources, attend club field trips and meetings, and join the community of DuPage County residents who love watching, studying, listening to, and learning more about birds.
