Learn about resources for first-generation students at College of DuPage

College of DuPage is hosting the First-Generation Student Series throughout the 2019-2020 academic year to help first-generation students navigate the enrollment process and learn about available resources.

The series includes the following free events located on the college's Glen Ellyn campus, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

• On Thursday, Nov. 21, first-generation students will receive an introduction to the college admission process from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Student Services Center, Room 2201. The session will explain misconceptions and differences between attending a university and attending a community college, pursuing a transfer track and joining the workforce, and financial aid and scholarships. The session will also cover how ACT/SAT test scores, high school diploma, GED and foreign high school credentials are used for admission.

• On Thursdays, Dec. 12 and Feb. 13, "Financing College 101 for First-Generation Students" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Student Resource Center, Room 2024. This session will be an in-depth presentation on tips and tricks to financing your education. Students will learn about budgeting for college, how the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) works at COD, calculating tuition and other expenses, payment options, and resources for undocumented, DACA-mented or mixed-status families.

• On Thursday, March 26, "Understanding Next Steps for First-Generation Students" will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Student Services Center, Room 2000. This session will prepare students for their next steps in the enrollment process. Counseling and Advising Services representatives will discuss what happens at New Student Advising and Registration, understanding placement tests and scores, course selection, and the importance of self-care. Staff members from COD's Learning Commons will discuss tutoring services, placement test preparation and other available workshops.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance will help students understand the Financial Aid Award Letter and important requirements. Presentations will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. followed by workshop time from 7 to 8 p.m.
