College of DuPage Professor Publishes Third Textbook
College of DuPage Mathematics Professor Michael O'Leary has published his most-recent college-level textbook "A First Course in Mathematical Logic and Set Theory."
Published by Wiley, O'Leary's book provides a mathematical introduction to the theory and applications of mathematical logic and set theory with an emphasis on writing proofs.
"I have an interest in mathematical logic and set theory and wanted to write a book that introduces both of these subjects," O'Leary said. "Such a book is not unique, but it is rare for a book to develop both at the same time."
O'Leary earned his B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science from Concordia University Irvine and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine. He has also published "Revolutions of Geometry" (Wiley, 2010), "The Structure of Proof: With Logic and Set Theory" (Prentice Hall, 2002) and contributed to "The Biographical Encyclopedia of Mathematicians" (Marshall Cavendish Corp., 1999).
O'Leary said that he is pleased with the book and relieved that it is finished. He said the scope of the book provides the flexibility to be used in a few different areas.
"This book will most likely be used in an upper-level course in a college or university," he said. "It can also be used in courses in which prepare students to write effective mathematical proofs."
