College of DuPage to Host 'Particles on Ice' Colloquium Sept. 28
The Health and Sciences program at College of DuPage will host "Particles on Ice: Detecting Neutrinos at the South Pole" at 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, in the Health and Science Center, Room 1234, on the College's main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
During this colloquium, University of Wisconsin Physics Professor James Madsen, Ph.D., will discuss ongoing experiments being conducted at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in the South Pole. The IceCube telescope records interactions of nearly massless subatomic particles called neutrinos and searches for dark matter. This powerful tool could reveal the physical processes associated with the origin of the highest energy particles in nature. In addition, IceCube studies the neutrinos themselves - energies of which far exceed those produced by accelerator beams.
During this session, former College of DuPage student Robert Zill will also discuss his summer internship, during which he worked on the IceCube project. Information will also be provided about summer physics internships available to COD students.
