Advocate Good Shepherd Supports Operation Click

Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital believes in Operation Click's mission. So much in fact, Good Shepherd, a sponsor of Operation Click, is giving the program seed money of $60,000 over two years to hire a part-time program coordinator. This new position will assist the President and Board of Directors of Operation Click with the coordination and implementation of the various program activities. Funding for this resulted from a 2011 hospital fundraising event to support health for youth in our communities.

Operation Click's goal is reduce teen fatalities and injuries from motor vehicle crashes by developing safe driving habits through education and positive reinforcement. Sean McGrath, a Crystal Lake police officer and now President of Operation click started the local program in 1998 with the participation of three high schools. “We focus on injury prevention and it's important to have a hospital involved,” said Sean McGrath, President of Operation Click. “Advocate Good Shepherd has been with us every step of the way since the beginning. It's a great partnership.”

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for adolescents in the United States, with approximately 18 adolescents dying each day due to motor vehicle accidents, according to Centers of Disease Control (CDC). Teens also have the lowest rate of seatbelt usage.

“Advocate Good Shepherd is always looking to proactively reduce health risks and improve wellbeing,” said Julie Mayer Director of Community Outreach and Government Relations. “We are impressed with the results Operation Click has proven over the years in increasing seat belt compliance.”

Since the program launched, seat belt usage by teen drivers in Crystal Lake has risen from 65% compliance to 95% compliance. The student driven program has now expanded to 30 high schools with chapters in both Illinois and Wisconsin, and is still continuing to grow.

With Operation Click continuing to grow, the program needs a self-driven individual who believes in and supports the program's mission. The applicant must possess strong organizational and communication skills, and have the ability to write grants. The key responsibilities will include fundraising and keeping in contact with participating schools to maintain a successful program.
