Kiwanis Club of Wheaton Provides Humanitarian Service Project with $700 Senior Citizen Sponsorship

The Kiwanis Club of Wheaton donated $700 to the Humanitarian Service Project?s (HSP) Senior Citizen Project to sponsor a needy senior in the program.

The club is devoted to helping children and needy adults and meets every Tuesday at 6:00 PM at the Senior Citizen Center in downtown Wheaton. The Kiwanis Club of Wheaton?s two major fundraising events, Peanut Day and Pancake Day, produce about 99% of their income, which is then divided among the various organizations the club supports. HSP is one of the largest recipients of these funds and since at least 1990 the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton has been supporting HSP?s various programs that assist needy children, seniors, and families.

The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP?s Senior Citizen Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries that include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishable foods, personal care items and paper products. The seniors also receive a monthly ?Secret Pal? gift and a Meal of the Month provided by HSP?s volunteers.

Paul Stevens, Citizenship Chair of the Kiwanis Club of Wheaton, explains why the club has been such a great friend to HSP: ?HSP has done a lot of good things for over 25 years and they have done a great job of assisting our organization and other organizations to do goodwill in the community.?

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP is given the highest honor charity by Charity Navigator for the seventh consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
