Glen Ellyn Rotary sponsors a senior in Humanitarian Service Project's program

The Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn donated $800 to the Humanitarian Service Project's (HSP) Senior Citizen Project to sponsor an impoverished senior in the program. The club, which meets on Thursdays at 12:10 p.m. at the Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn, has supported HSP since 2003 by conducting food drives and giving trees and has also sponsored a senior since 2008.

The mission of the Rotary Foundation is to bring understanding, goodwill, and peace to the world through the promotion of health and education and the alleviation of poverty. "Service above self" is essential to the Glen Ellyn club's drive towards making a positive change in both local and international communities. Recently, in Glen Ellyn, its members have worked to renovate the Family Service Shelter and continue to enhance the educational experience and achievement of disadvantaged children by helping them access required school supplies. The club also awards college and vocational scholarships to local students and is involved in a variety of international projects in South and Central America. The Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn has been a great friend of HSP and the needy senior citizens it serves over the years.

The 120 impoverished seniors in HSP's Senior Citizen Project receive monthly deliveries of 90 lbs. of groceries that include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen meats, non-perishable foods, personal care items and paper products. The seniors also receive a monthly "Secret Pal" gift and a Meal of the Month provided by HSP's volunteers.

Karole Kettering, HSP Founder and Executive Director, feels so fortunate for the continued partnership with the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn. She said, "It is so wonderful how they promote unity through an active approach to serving the community. They do so with such integrity and character."

About The Humanitarian Service Project

HSP is given the highest honor charity by Charity Navigator for the seventh consecutive year. HSP's mission is to alleviate the pain and suffering that poverty creates in seniors and children living in DuPage and Kane counties, Illinois. Last year during the Christmas Offering, 1,264 children received gifts and 150 impoverished families received three weeks of groceries, frozen meats, and fresh produce. With the Senior Citizen Project, HSP provides a monthly food delivery and secret pal gifts to 120 low-income seniors. The Children's Birthday Project reaches the youngest underprivileged, making birthdays and Christmas truly memorable occasions for 700 children. Feed the Kids provides low-income families with groceries and fresh produce. HSP conducts an annual school supplies drive, which sends supplies to the DuPage Back to School Fair in addition to furnishing schools and individual children with necessary supplies.
