ECC board approves three-year faculty contract

During a special meeting on Thursday, March 23, the Community College District 509 Board of Trustees ratified a new three-year contract agreement with the Elgin Community College Faculty Association, completing negotiations that began September 2016. The union's members reviewed and ratified the agreement on Wednesday, March 22. The two sides reached a tentative agreement on March 10, 2017.

"We are pleased to have a new agreement with our faculty so we can continue working together to fulfill our mission to improve people's lives through learning," says Eleanor MacKinney, chair of the ECC board of trustees. "Both teams worked hard throughout this process; I appreciate the dedication and efforts that went into producing a contract that is fair and sustainable."

Under the terms of the agreement, the 132 full-time faculty members of ECCFA will receive modest increases for step movement (awarded for additional teaching experience) and lane movement (for additional education) in years two and three of the contract. Step movement will not be granted in year one of the contract. During the term of this three-year contract there will be no increase to the base.

There are two categories of part-time adjunct faculty members of ECCFA, both of which will receive a modest increase in hourly salary in years two and three of the contract. No increase in hourly salary will be granted in year one of the contract. A 1% increase to the base will be granted in years two and three of the contract.

The increase in compensation to ECCFA members averages 5.04 % over the three-year contract period with a total cost to the college of $1.8 million, which will be covered by operating revenues the college will receive from tuition, property taxes and state funding. ECC's total operating budget for fiscal year 2017 is $80.3 million.

The new contract will expire December 31, 2019.

In keeping with Elgin Community College's dedication to providing access to key information, the complete agreement will soon be made public and available on elgin.edu.
