Career and technical education programs play a vital role in meeting workforce demands

Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares individuals for high-skill, in-demand jobs that further Illinois' global competitiveness. These programs are at the core of the community college's mission to provide educational opportunities tailored to local business and industry needs. Last year, 65 percent of Illinois community college graduates earned a CTE degree or certificate.

College of Lake County joins with community colleges throughout the state in February to celebrate Career and Technical Education Month. CLC provides students with a life-changing path from dreams to bright futures.

"At CLC, students find all the practical prerequisites for their success: wide-ranging program options, tuition value, convenient locations and small classes taught by experienced faculty," said Dr. Rich Haney, provost. "More than that, they also find inspiration and motivation from faculty who have had years of experience in industry and bring real world learning to the classroom. CLC's robust career and technical education programs combine strong academics, state- of-the-art learning environments and supportive career counseling and workforce preparation."

With 40 career preparation programs and more than 100 certificate options, CLC even helps students who hold college degrees enhance their career prospects.

"CTE programs are investing in students and providing them with the latest technology and skills that will prepare them to become successful employees and future leaders," said Dr. Karen Hunter Anderson, Illinois Community College Board executive director.

In recognition of Career and Technical Education Month, CLC is hosting the 7th Annual STEM Day for Girls Feb. 25. The program seeks to motivate middle school and high school girls interested in STEM careers to become innovative and creative thinkers and to pursue careers in this area. Presenters include CLC faculty members plus other professional experts and teachers.

Girls can select from a variety of topics, including chemistry, biology, lasers, medical imaging, engineering, nursing, math, computer aided design and more. Each session provides hands-on, practical experiences. For information, visit www.clcillinois.edu/STEM.
